Hello, it’s Chrissy Boy here. Send me a question and I'll do my best to answer it.

Unless it contains any of the following:

  1. When/where is the next gig? - Please see the gig section above.
  2. Can I get your autographs?- This service is not available via the website, all applications must be made in person.
  3. Can I get backstage passes? - No.
  4. Will there ever be another 2Tone tour? - This is not very likely, is it?
  5. Where does Suggs get his sunglasses? – Persol.
  6. Where do you get your suits/hats/shoes? Gresham Blake, The Saturday Club, Hackett, Christies, Loake, Lock and Co, The British Boot Company.
  7. When is the “The Madness” album being re released? – I have still not got a clue.

[The questions above will be rinsed, filtered, processed and finally deleted by our new “Timewaster (tm)” interface, leaving me more time to answer the really important ones].

Thanks CB x

This is an invitation to all of madness. Next time you play in Portsmouth you are welcome to use my quiet back garden to chill out food and booze included

Hi Chris
Hope you are well.
My question, is there a definitive website that lists all previous madness gigs.
I’m trying to remember when I saw you in Edinburgh in 1983?
My first time was Dundee 1981.
Google tells me you played Edinburgh on March 9th 1983, which would have been my 16th birthday. I definitely saw you in 83 in Edinburgh with Joe boxer’s…….just don’t remember it being my 16th. Was a traumatic time in my life for one reason or another….. and just wondering if I’ve wiped it out that it was my birthday.
Cheers
Ross.

Hiya,

Please answer me!!!

This might sound crazy but here we go.

My mums 50th is next year and we are having a party. You are her favourite band since she was a kid. Suggs actually gave her a hug and called her a little cutie, I can’t even count how many times she’s told me that story. Every time we have a drink madness is played and she’s teaching me every word to every song possible. Is it even possible to get you to play at her party next year? We are in eastbourne & it’s in July. If this is even possible please please could you let me know much and if you can.
I know she would be shaking at her knee’s if I got this surprise for her.

Thank you so much!!!

Dear Katie
Oh we can’t do that, everyone will want us to! Great Mum you’ve got there, though. How many times do you have a drink, by the way? We have a lot of songs lolz

Also surprised me that despite making fame in such a multi cultural city, from a style of music based off of reggae that you’ve made no comment on the protests so far?

Dear Bradley
We are not playing live at the moment and if we were, we might make some reference to BLM. We changed the website to an all black profile on the 2nd of June.

Hi, just wondering if you can help me. My dad is a mad fan and I grew up listening to my dad play your music. This week my Dad (Ben) found out he has 6-12 months left to live after being diagnosed with a rare Nasal Cancer in February 2020.
This news has shook our world but I am hoping to give him the best time whatever he may have left. He’s only 48 and whilst he’s fine in himself for now after just finishing radiotherapy this will change quickly.
Is there anything you could do for him please as I don’t think he’ll see you play again?
Thank you for your time

Hiya I know this is a long shot but for years my mum has loved madness . Last year for her birthday I took her to Doncaster race course show but this year nothing is on. Her birthday is on the 1st July and is her big 50th so I wondered if you could do a video saying happy birthday. I know you probably won’t be able to but I just wanted to give her the best birthday.

I don’t know how we could do this really but please wish her my very best

I don’t know how to ask this question without sounding uninformed, but has Amazon and other music streaming businesses made it difficult for you to make money with music anymore? I really hope you tour more because you all deserve better.

Avatar

Dear Erika
That’s nice of you. Streaming is quite a thing and if you get enough streams then you make money but it’s not like good old physical sales.
We make most of our income from live shows these days but hey I can’t complain.

It’s been way to long since the roundhouse gig.

Hi Chris,
Hope you’re all well.
I know you’re a busy bloke so I hope my email is answerable.
You guys did a Christmas tour called The Man in the Mad Suit Tour. I saw you at the old Wembley arena. At the end you performed a song I’d never heard before or since. It was during an encore. You all came out and pushed huge weather-type balloons into the crowd. I think it was something like Moondance or Moonstruck? What happened with that and was there ever a demo or a recording I could access?

Secondly, just wanted to say I hope Cathal is ok. His absence from public life is of course his right, but it is worrying to a multitude of fans after releasing such a powerful but deeply personal album.
Please add my best wishes to all the others when you next have contact with him.
Stay safe, CB.

Dirty Yank here.

I’m going back and getting all the 30th anniversary deluxe releases. I, so far, have One Step Beyond, (M/1), Absolutely (A/2), 7 (D/3), The Rise & Fall (N/4), Keep Moving (E/5), and Wonderful (!/8). What albums are (S/6) and (S/7)? And why is Mad Not Mad so bloody expensive for the bells & whistles edition? I’ve ordered One Step Beyond supa version and haven’t gotten it from the post yet, so I’m not 100% it’s the (M/1) version. Is The Madness (S/6) or (S/7)? When I put it on my shelf, the spines will spell out Madnes? My anal/OCD mind won’t be able to cope! Thanks for everything!

Hi Chris,
Bit of a long shot with this but just thought I’d enquire. I’m a Year 6 teacher at a primary school in Rotherham and have written a Leavers’ Play based around Madness songs (changed a few lyrics too e.g our house to our school) . Due to circumstances with Covid, the play as it would normally have been performed was cancelled but we’ve decided to do this virtually. It would be great if you or any of the lads could send a message to the kids that I could potentially surprise them with when it’s all put together. I’d be happy to share anything we do with you too if you’d be interested. As I say, I know it’s a long shot as you must all be very busy – no worries if not, will still be a big fan of your music whatever the outcome of this request.
Anyway, thanks for your time and all the best to you all.

Dear Steve
What is the connection between Madness and Peter Ustinov? I can’t put the answer on here obvs. Let me know how it goes and I’ll tell you the answer.

Avatar

Excellent question, you’ve got all 6 of us stumped. The guesses were that Peter Ustinov was either related to one of you or a god parent to one of you.
Go on then, put us out of our misery, what’s the answer?

Avatar

Dear Steve this is my reply;

When we were making the “Baggy Trousers” video we needed some massive trousers for Thommo. We went to a theatrical costumiers called Berman and Nathans, an incredible place like an Alladins cave of clothes. They had stuff like the jacket Micheal Caine wore in “Zulu” and other brilliant props and clothes. We loved it in there and we were always trying to nick stuff..So we got some massive baggy trousers and they told me they were Peter Ustinovs. This has been mentioned in interviews so it wasn’t a “Madness only” question. [None of then would remember anyway!] Next weeks question is;
What was the waist? They would fit Thommo now, haha. That’s if you’re having a quiz..

Good morning. I’m sure you get lots of requests but, due to the current situation with the world I thought I’d reach out to you and your group in case you are able to help. My sister and her husband are 50 on 4 June and, as you can imagine, all their plans to celebrate their special joint birthday are being chipped away week by week. My sister, Ursula, has followed the band all her adult life and see you every year at least once. Her husband has joined her passion for your music and entertainment and has joined her for the past 20 years. I just wonder if it is possible for you to help mark the occasion in one way or another, even if it is just a message or card, to make their day and take away the disappointment of not being able to do the things they want to do. I appreciate you taking the time to read my message and I look forward to hearing from you. Keep safe and take care.

Hi Chris, my older brother Stuart has been obsessed with Madness since he was 12 and I was brainwashed with your music (which I love by the way). Believe it or not, he actually looked like Suggs back in the day. It is his 50th on 16 April. Because of this bloody COVID-19, everything has been cancelled. Don’t want to sound like I’m giving you a sob story but he has had a really shitty time. His wife died from brain cancer a couple of years ago, he’s met a great woman from Dublin and they were supposed to be going on a cruise around Italy. I am trying to think of something unique for a birthday gift and I’m wondering if Suggs or one of you could record a personal birthday message for him? Or do something else that would cheer him up for his 50th while being stuck in the house without any of us being able to visit him? Appreciate the time you’ve taken to read this. Hope you and your loved ones are in good health and not affected by this horrible virus. Kind regards, Lisa

Such great news that you are coming back to America, even if it is delayed a year. I just found out, and it sure gives me something to look forward to with all this virus mess. Anyway, thats all. See you in Boston in 2021!

Avatar

Hey Chris,

I saw you got pushed back a year. And I just had my mint-condition passport mailed two weeks ago. What a great time in our history to finally get one!
That’s unfortunate, but I can still see you in May 2021. I won’t forget that deal you prompted about the ticket. It’ll be good fun.
In the meantime, I was hoping for some constructive/positive feedback on this little demo thing I put up recently. It has lyrics and I do intend on singing it, but for now it’s a 1-minute instrumental. I play everything on it from drums to piano. The guitar is acoustic fed through a Boss ME25 board. I hope you find it alright particularly since Mike, Woody, Mark and you all basically taught me piano, drums, bass and guitar, respectively (as a result it sounds very ska and kind of Madness-y). It would be great to hear what Mike thinks of the piano…it’s inspired by how he may have a base of chords mixed with a melody on top. I also inverted a chord in the verse the same way he does in ‘On the Beat Pete.’ It’s inspired by a girl, like usual.
Either way thanks for even listening to it, it’s just missing my vocals and a brass section. And of course, stay healthy and cool.

We will be performing ‘Our House’ the musical in June at Perth College Theatre. The cast is made up of adults and youths. The adults are loving re-living their youth with your music and the youths are loving discovering your music. I think it’s the happiest cast I have ever Directed. We’re holding a fundraiser and wondered if you’d be willing to give us a signed photo to auction at our event on 20th March. If that’s not something you do, I totally understand. We’ll still love you all the same. The first dance at my wedding was ‘It Must Be Love’ and I’m still married 25 years later so it goes to show that song will always be magic. Huge thanks.

Hi there, great post. Could you help me with a question I have? Are nitro powered rc cars really that much better than electric ones? It seems like the gas ones are more expensive but not much better. My brother was telling me to only even consider a gas car. Thanks for your help.

I don’t know anything about RC cars but in the real world I just got a Tesla. Pretty good but the windscreen is a bit weak. I won’t buy a gas car again, for sure.

Dear Chrissy Boy,
Thank you so much for your wonderful music and spreading the joy. Saw the band twice last year, (dream come true), and you were just amazing. Great music and graphics. The roundhouse gig was stunningly atmospheric. Thank you also for Drip Fed Fred live. I did not think in a million years I would be lucky enough to see you perform & play it live. A wonderful shock. I love the fact the band has in the past highlighted with dignity homeless hostels, is there anything we as fans can do as a collective to support these vital facilities? Does the band have a fundraiser or something we can donate into? I tried looking but would appreciate your view. If you do get a chance to see this then Thank you for your time. Wishing you all the very best for now and in the future, Kindest regards, Sandra x ps What is the cure for Madnessitis the insanely post gig feel good factor that goes on for months…..

Hiya,
I grew up listening to Madness and play the piano to a high standard. I want to start learning bass and would love to know a few things about Mark’s bass setup as he has such a wicked tone.

What strings does he use?
Are any of the electronics/pickups upgraded in his p bass?

Thank you :) +Looking forward to seeing you with my family @Westonbirt soon!

Avatar

Dear Victor
[Great name, by the way].

I emailed the great man and this is what he had to say; [he knows a lot more about his stuff than I do!]

“Hello,

The basses I have, at the moment, don’t have any particular changes to the pick-ups. Although, I was lucky enough to get one set of pick-ups wound to
the same spec as my vintage Fenders – right down to using the same of type wire. (ThIs is very nerdy).

The only advice I could give is match the sound of your bass to the type of music you want to play. If it’s heavy metal and you’re playing with pick or you’re playing Motown with your fingers – find a bass that fits.

Which brings us on to strings. I’d say the same: find a set that suits what you are doing. I started out playing, and used for many years, Rotosound Swing Bass, roundwound strings (45-105). These were bright and recorded really well. As I’ve got older, I’ve wanted a slightly lighter feel so I now use the Fender roundwound strings (7250M). Still 45-105 but they just feel lighter. This must be the way there are made?

For certain things, I use flatwound strings: La Bella ‘Deep Talkin’ Bass’. These are the strings that James Jameson used on all of the Motown records. And D’Addario ECB84 Flatwound Chromes (40-100). Both are great.

I’ve recently got into pedals. Don’t get me started on pedals – we could be here all day”….

We’re a young family of Dima and Katya from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. We’ve been devoted fans of yours for many years and this year decided to spend our honeymoon in Amsterdam enjoying your concert.
Being inspired by your music we’re led by the principles of honesty, kindness, mutual support and active social position, which form the fundamental positive outlook for us. This allows us to set a good example of a young family to many guys from our company.

February 23 happens to be my wife’s birthday
I’m not quite sure if it’s appropriate enough to ask you about it, as we have never met with you in person, but I’d dare to ask if there is a tiny chance that you could record a short video greeting card for her? Katerina would be the happiest birthday girl on Earth if you could kindly do it!

Hey Chris,

Red here again. Responding to your last reply about making it to Boston…
I didn’t get a ticket to Boston. But I got one to New York and I’m getting my passport submitted next week. I’ll see you at the Manhatten centre or whatever it was called, I’ll figure it out, unlike Lee’s issues in Manhatten back in 1980…anyways, the ticket is purchased.
If you do put me on the guest list as you offered, that would be amazing. Either way, seeing you in real life will be a pretty awesome milestone in my life. Whatever you do, thank you very much, and much love and music. If I could I’d bring my professional camera and flash, but I know that probably isn’t allowed in a venue, so that’ll be fine.
I’ll see you in May. In Manhatten. Not Boston, but the Big Apple. I’ll ensure to give my thanks to each of you for indirectly teaching me bass, guitar, piano and drums over the years, respectively.

So glad to see you guys coming across the pond and I see you’ve got loads of summer dates, so I realize you lot got your calendar full. And this is a big ask, but one can only dream… I’ve been a fan since I was a lad and I ain’t a no more as I approach the mid century mark, but I’ve never seen you guys live and I’m a bigger fan now than ever and surely there are hoards more like me in the US. Is there anyway you guys could add a date or two, particular for those of living in the hellish Bible Belt of the southeast? Charlotte, NC, Atlanta, GA, Columbia, SC, or Charleston, SC (I highly recommend the latter if you’ve never been, as it’s got some history and beaches and it ain’t far from me.) I’d even offer you guys my partner’s beach house in N. Carolina at Cape Hatteras, but not many places to play there and it may be rented already. But a show or two in the southeastern US would be most welcomed. I wish all the best on your tour and thank you guys for so much great music over the years. Lastly, I am grateful to see some Madness DVD’s finally available and I would encourage to record more shows and release them as well, particularly with varied setlists (and that’s no complaint, just being a long time fan, I love to see/hear you guys perform some of the rarer material that doesn’t get played too often.)
Cheers and thank you for taking the time to read this! ~ Peace & Love, Chad

Hi CB,
I was very late to the Madness party. I didn’t really get into Madness till ’85. First record of yours I bought was ‘Yesterdays Men’ on 12″. Very good I have to say. Before that I was into Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears and early hip hop. There was only John Peel really playing rap and hip hop on the radio then so it was quite a rarity. Anyway, at this particular time I was off school with the mumps and sooo ill. Fortunately, I recorded a documentary on the Beeb about the history of the music video that was presented by John Peel and John Walters. It was on throughout the night as I recall so was quite unusual in that sense. There was an interview on there with Madness where you all discussed your videos. After watching that again and again while I was ill I became a fan of the band….and then you split up about 6 months later! Anyway, you can see from the interview that you’re all slightly ‘weary’ and could maybe see the writing on the wall? Still, I had good fun picking up your singles at second hand stores and I always made sure I played Madness on the jukebox in pubs, just to ensure you’d never be forgotten. Anyway, i’m wittering on a bit now. I don’t really have any questions to ask…I just wanted to say ‘Thank You’ for making my life just that little bit more pleasurable by simply doing what you do! See Ya!

Avatar

Yo Chris,
I did enjoy your book, very funny in a lot of places – your ‘recycling’ idea, Lee’s disappearances in Manhattan, etc. – and well-written. Only needs its two sequels, ‘When We Was We’ and ‘Since We Was We.’
I went to my first-ever ska gig back in December. I didn’t even realize there was a ska scene in Ottawa (albeit a tiny one). I’ve never thoroughly enjoyed a gig from beginning to end all the way before without getting impatient or distracted. One band used trombone as the lead instrument. Wow. The organist in the main band looked identical to Mike in how he played and moved behind the keys. Amazing.
It was posted in that Facebook group that you guys are apparently coming to Boston in April this year. That’s worth the drive for me, just need to renew my passport to get into the States…if I have the courage to travel on my own that far, I’ll try and see you for the very first time after seventeen years of my being a fan. Since you appear to be coming to this continent again, my big thanks to your willing to get on a plane and come over. If I make it, I’ll try and wave or something. I don’t need to bother you for an autograph – you gave me one ten and a half years ago via the old site after I was your 1000th reply.
PS – To my extreme surprise, while I was at a local Mod Nite at a club I attend, the DJs chose to put ‘Our House’ on (speeding it up to C#). I never viewed it as a dancy club song…make any sense? Either way, they played it nine years after my friends attempted to get them to on my birthday haha…thought it was a funny thing to relate. Young adults dancing to ‘Our House’ in an Ottawa nightclub.
Thanks for answering my last question by the way. Happy new year!

Hey Chris,
Greetings from the east coast of the U.S.! Just wanted to write a quick note to let my favorite band know how much I’ve enjoyed their music and antics over the years. Growing up in the U.S. we had two radio stations to listen to: one played rock(AC/DC, etc) and the other played classic rock (The Doors, etc). What variety! I’ll never forget when MTV finally arrived and I heard (and saw) One Step Beyond for the first time. Absolutely blew me away and instantly made me a Madness fan. Eventually I found a record store near me that had the Complete Madness record and the rest is history. I only wish you guys had been bigger in the states, never understood why you weren’t. Personally, I blame our current president. He’s a dick, and most certainly NOT a Madness fan! Anyway, thanks for all the great music and fun over the years. You guys and your music never fails to make this 51 year old feel 21 again. Keep it up!

Hello, my name is Bazil Figura, I’m a 61-year-old Training and Development Officer who works for a company in Norwich, I have grown up listening to Madness and the music has never lost its appeal.
The reason I am writing to you is in the hope you may be able to help me, allow me to explain;
I have been a widower for just over four years, I lost my beloved wife in 2015 to a very aggressive brain tumor, Marie was first diagnosed in 2012 and underwent three major operations between 2012 and 2015, unfortunately the last operation was too much on her failing body and she never recovered from the operation.
The staff at Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge were brilliant, from the consultants, the surgeons, the nurses even down to the admin staff who arranged my stay on site during the long days and nights at my wife’s bedside at the hospital, but the group who helped in more ways than I can ever be thankful for were the Macmillan nurses.
They not only cared for my wife during her end of her life but they provided vital support for myself and the family as they understood those who are left behind have their own battles to fight; grief, sadness, acceptance and the practicalities of being alone and the expectations for being able to cope.
I will forever be in the debt for the time, kindness, understanding and help they gave to my family.
To help say thank you in a practical way to these brilliant and beautiful people I have signed up for Ride London 2020 and will be riding for Team Macmillan, in order to secure a coveted place, I have pledged to raise a minimum of £600.
In order to achieve my promise of £600 sponsorship I have come up with what I think is a clever way of fund raising – a charity auction of celebrity items.
So, I am writing to stars of stage, screen and TV, politicians, lords and ladies, sporting hero’s, icons of business and industry if fact as many people as I can think of. I realize not everyone will reply but if only 50% do then I’ll be on my way to achieving my goal
This is why I am writing to wonderful people like yourselves asking you to donate something that can be auctioned off, it can be absolutely anything, it could be a signed book or script, framed photo, an item of clothing – in fact anything that might raise interest. The bigger and more interesting or unusual the better.
I cannot think of a more iconic band who might be able to help me in some way, I know you must get inundated with requests such as this but in the hope you can help me achieve my goal I would be a fool not to approach you and ask for your kindness and help.
I will be getting in contact with my local commercial radio station to arrange the auction as they can give me enough media exposure to maximize my effort to hit my target.
So please, if you can help by donating something, anything that is signed or autographed that can be sold at auction you will be helping some very special people, special to me and my family for the kindness, compassion and support they gave when we needed it the most and special to the people they look after giving the exceptional care which is needed and appreciated by all.
I have also included the detail of my justgiving page where if you wish you can donate directly to my target. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Bazil-FiguraRideLondon2020
On behalf of my late wife, my family and myself thank you for taking the time to read my letter.
Kind regards

Hello, My name is Frank O’Donoghue. I was at your gig in Limerick. Fantastic!!!! Would you (Madness) be available for a 60th Birthday party in Dromoland Castle on 17 July 2020? Oh yeah, how much would it cost if you (plural) happened to be available. Cheers

Avatar

Thank you , thank you, thank you for coming back to the states. I’ll be buying tickets to the Boston show. My family took our first ever international holiday to see you in Cardiff last year and it was one of our best experiences ever. We love you guys and are so happy to have you in the US. Was I supposed to ask a question?….. Which band members are on Santa’s naughty list?

Hi Chris,

First of all, loved the House of Fun, can’t wait for next year.

Do you know why the ‘Can’t touch us now’ album has disappeared off Amazon Music?

Thanks

Do you sell a sheet music book with all of your songs? My partner plays the piano and is a HUGE fan!
I have only found websites that sell individual sheet music pages. It would be nice to have it in a book….
Thanks Nicole

Looking forward to your visit to Boston in May 2020. Was wondering if you could bring several kegs of each of your beers for us to try? Or at least sell some six packs at the merchandise desk?

Dear Chris,
What a jam packed 40XL of a year , topped off by a teaser of new material. In fitting with past, present and future themes, I would dearly love you to finally record sunshine voice in mash up of old and new tunes. God knows I’ve been banging on about this particular song on various media platforms for eons!! Possible?
Looking forward to new stuff next year.
Have a cracker of a Christmas and love to you all and all the mad heads out there.
Regards Eric
Ps. As your last correspondent highlighted , I too was in a band in the mid naughties- a scaled down ska band called Fullstop. We did a mixture of originals and covers Inc the prince, and in our own little way did ok supporting the Beat in Manchester in 2004 and getting Horace Panter guesting on bass at a one off gig in Coventry. This proved how democratic and real the 2tone movement was in connecting with the people. If you have time or inclination you can check out the band on my YouTube site along with my solo non ska songs under my name Eric Coudrill

Buongiorno CB, I think it’s time to celebrate XL with a special night of Madness and orchestra in one of the best theater of the Planet! Arena di Verona is ready to welcome you all as soon as you can (Barzo Verona model piano in ‘My girl’ was a prelude). Thanks for all we received and given we are so proud to live in Madness!

Good Afternoon,

This is a random question. My name is Tom from a pub called the Royal in Tankerton. Suggs is a regular in here when he visits Whitstable, Just wondering if we were to do a one off event here would you be interested and how much would you charge.

Just out of curiosity more so, to see it it would be fee sable.

Thanks,

Avatar

Hello you lot!

I hope you have recovered from the house of fun weekender by now. Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but there is always the next/last year!!

A random question for you this time. Long story short I proposed to my girlfriend at the last HOF to which she luckily said yes during your set then decided to surf a wheelie bin shouting at everyone how we are engaged.

We went to look at a venue today in cornwall and got chatting to which the person showing us the place (polhawn fort near millbrook) commented that one of the members got married there.

Can you confirm or deny that this is true? As its bugging the hell out of me if it’s true or not!

Cheers n gone as we say.

Dear David
If you can find out which member it was, that would help. I would say fake news but maybe they didn’t tell me.

I’m sure you get this question all the time but I just noticed you will be touring in America in May… I notice you’re not playing in LA or San Diego… Do you think you guys will add dates and make that happen? I do not wanna miss you guys this time around and I have to get a ticket to another area I will… Thank you

Avatar

Hi Chris,
Any reason why Can’t Touch Us Now and Waiting for the Ghost Train have disappeared off Spotify and i Player, and if they will be coming back. I also wondered how these streaming services worked for a band which a rich back catalogue like Madness – do you get more exposure/sales as more people start to use streaming services than physical copies?

Avatar

Hi Chris, I’ve seen you live six times now and I’ve loved it every time. Keep up the excellent work! My question to you is, what is your favourite song to perform live?

Avatar

Hi people from Madness,

We are very very much looking forward to your show in Amsterdam next week.
Just because the Rocksteady Beat of Madness is SUPER !

We are the only Dutch Madness tribute band of Holland.
And trying to get as close as possible to your sound.
As real diehard fans it is an honour to play your music.
Every rehearsal is a party.

We have a horn section (baritonsax & tenorsax) that’s One Step Beyond.
Trying to get the same feel in your songs and add a personal touch of our own to it.

It would be lovely to arrange a meat & great with you guys.
And, maybe…., to jam a bit with the band.

C U soon,

Hello Chrissyboy. Very nearly had my Madness themed pinball machine at H.O.F this year but it wasn’t quite ready. You may have some stuff coming your way via management to sign to go on it ready for next year, they are very keen to see it in the flesh. Fancy a go on it when it’s done ?!

Hi Chris.
With the new single, the International Madness Community fans (I’m sure it exists..) become crazy : we’re all hope for a a new album. My question is simple : if it’s on a way , will you make a deluxe boxset availaible on the Madshop like you’ve done from the previous albums (with bsides, and why not a DVD/bluray of the concerts filmed by Sky Art). I hope, we hope, now it’s up to you, Nutty Boys!! All the best from France! Steve

Hi chris!
We’re at the madness butlins weekend and I was just wondering if I could make it extra special and have my dad meet the guys. He’s been in a ska tribute band and has been supporting you for years. He’s rubbed off his love of Madness onto me and my brother as well!! Our family has been through a difficult time recently and we’re using this weekend as a way to forget about it. Please :)

Dear Scott
It was very similar. I suggested we only played songs from 1979, quite a short set. We wouldn’t have played “Decieves the Eye” and “Young and The Old” I think. Well, maybe the latter song.
Thanks, CB

Avatar

Nice one about the Beastie boys and your friend Noel story.
Since you recently reminded us about the AYR 1979 gig recording download i was checking around and found out you guys left the two 2 tour that very same gig by waving your goodbyes at the middle of the Specials live set and crossing the stage with your luggage on hand. I know you are/were good friends back then but Do you think they got mad about it?
Did you get their reaction? how was it?

I think it was a Madness moment and funny one haha
but tell us more please.

Avatar

Dear Domingo
It was very funny. I suggested it. We waited till “Blank Expression” [one of our faves, because it was quite "Nutty"] then we “Nutty trained” it, suitcases in hand, behind Roddy, Neville, Lynval and Horace. They all laughed when they realised we were behind them because the audience were shouting at us haha. I can still remember it so well. Really great times, really fun times. We literally went home that night. Long way though but I’m sure we did..maybe a real train? of course I just looked it up..Glasgow to London 5 hours so maybe we went to Glasgow and came home the next day.

We, the international Madness fans, being in the great majority in the physical, material and financial incapacity to go there, ask that the concerts of November 17, 2019 as well as the three of December at the Roundhouse, London be recorded live so that we can have a testimony of this beautiful birthday of the band we have been accompanying for 40 years.

Hey Chris, been awhile,

I receive your book this coming Wednesday (the 16th). I’ve never pre-ordered anything online before so when I did in January I misinterpreted express delivery and purchase to mean I’d get it within a week then, hah…it should still be worth the money.
Anyways, I was just wondering, it occurred to me you must have done a few takes on that line you sing in the chorus of ‘Our House’ – the ‘something tells you…’ line. The extended version ends on that line on its own. You sound almost professional in your vocal delivery – did that take a bit of practice or was it natural? You give off the impression of jollyness mixed with seriousness as your voice follows the notes of each word, descending to ‘it.’
Examining this sort of thing has become more of my thing as I’ve been developing a critical approach to music (I sometimes review local musicians in the independent scene here in Ottawa, I’ve even put up a website). The whole craft is fascinating.
I look forward to the text, and thanks for your reply, as you have typically done so with me for the past fifteen years, way back since the old Madness site.

Hey JC

Hi Chris,

I am a big fan of the 2 Tone movement and I travel around the country watching gigs and trying to meet the people who were involved in the fantastic movement of 2 Tone. I am well aware of your involvement with the label playing with Madness.

Over the past couple of years I have managed to meet up with Buster Bloodvessel, Neville Staple, Horace Panter, Dave Wakeling, Rankin’ Roger, Roddy Byers, Rhoda Dakar, Everett Morton, Pauline Black, Gaps Hendrickson and Jerry Dammers. I also met up with Paul Heskett and John Shipley from The Swinging Cats in Coventry a couple of months ago and spent a few hours in their company.

I have been trying to get record sleeves and other bits and bats signed by the musicians that were involved with 2Tone. I’m wondering if we’d be able to organise for you to sign my Dance Craze LP and a few Madness singles that I have? I have managed to get 14 signatures on Dance Craze at the moment and I’m trying to add yourself to it as well!

Please let me know if this is something that can be arranged?

Thanks

Hello Chris

I was at Car Fest this past weekend and thoroughly enjoyed your set.

As I was stood enjoying all the great nutty sounds I found myself picking out your guitar sound in the mix.

Can you give me a quick run down on the equipment that you use for your guitar sound please? It looked like you were using a Marshall Silver jubilee half stack. Is that an original or Re-issue? Do you use any effects or processing?

Thanks!

Avatar

Enjoying the best of set but wondering why no liner notes. Not even the names of the band members!
I still don’t know who plays what instrument or what inspired songs such as Michael Caine.

Avatar

Chris, madness performed live on the tube in 1983 & 84. I also seem to remember you performing on the said show in November 1985. However I can’t find any information to confirm if this is correct or just a figment of my imagination. Could you confirm with me either way if I’m correct or not?.

Avatar

Hi,

I’m a teacher in the North East of Scotland and I’m a long-time fan. The school I work in is called “The Gordon Schools” and it’s in a small town called Huntly. Despite how the name sounds, we are a regular comprehensive school.

I’ve seen you guys performing a number of times, the first time back in ’81 in Aberdeen (I was NOT one of the ones booing through the Belle Stars set – something I still find cringingly embarassing, that my home crowd would treat a band like that, don’t know if you remember, wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t) and most recently a few years back at the Aberdeen AECC. Always great, always nutty.

Anyway, the reason I’m contacting you is because, as well as teaching biology and spending most of my time in the pub, passing round the ready-rub and trying not to think of when the lunchtime bell will ring again, I also direct our school show with one of my colleagues. This year we are putting on (you guessed it) “Our House” (Yay!).

We are at the very early stages of drumming up enthusiasm for the show, then we’ll start casting and eventually we will be performing in early December. What would be really cool, and what would make this extra special, is if we could get some words of encouragement from yourself and/or some of the other Nutty Boys. I’d love to be able to read something from you out at assembly.

Any chance?

All I wanted was a word…

Either way, thanks for reading this and giving me years of fun listening to your music.

I would like to ask a couple of questions;
1. If at 18 you could have seen the future which song would surprise you most and why?
2. Looking back at your career which song a) gives you most pleasure b) surprises you it actually got completed and finally c) you thought didn’t have the Madness factor but were proved wrong?

Avatar

Dear Nick
I think this could all apply to the same song. “Can’t Catch You Crying”. I would never have written a song like that at 18 [by the way I didn't start writing songs till I was about 21]. It has given me great pleasure now it’s been recorded and it was intended for CRUNCH! [my part time band with Thommo] not Madness..

Hey Chris,
Just wanted to share my crazy dream last night with you ;

Madness became the first band to play on the moon , and it was beamed via sat to earth . Richard Branson had something to do with organising it .

I see this becoming true before 2025.

Or you could all go up on a virgin space shuttle and be the first band to play in space .

Suggs could pay for it all with a show about old London trams.

Seems like something Madness would actually do. See ya in space

Congratualtions on a spectacular new album! I painted a picture for you of your white Gibson Les Paul leaning against a chair with your bowler hat some years ago which was commissioned by Elaine Anderson. (Cramlington).
I wondered if you still have it? I painted it whilst recovering from a hand accident and never got a copy of it. I wondered if it was at all possible to get a photograph of it or a pic of you holding it please?
Didn’t really know how to contact you until I saw this.

No problem if this is not possible. Would just love to see it again.

Big madness fan also ;)

Hope you’re well.

Kind regards

John

Hi Chris
My comment is not so much to do with your music although I will say it is awesome and can’t wait to see you in Bournemouth in December. However, I did used to work as a postie in Golders Green with Matt. Matt was a good friend to my brother Colin, also a postie, who tragically was killed in a car crash in East Finchley 17 years ago to the day. Matt was one of the pallbearers at his funeral and just seeing you on Sky Arts and also thinking if my bruv I was hoping you could pass my best onto Matt and I hope he is doing well. I have not seen him for 15 years now as I moved to Bournemouth at this time and lost touch. Be great to hear how he us getting on if he is still with the Royal Mail etc… If he has a Facebook account he can always look me up as I would love to hear from him after all these years.
Thanks for your time in reading this more unusual post.
Keep up the good work and as I said looking forward to Bournemouth in December and the gig.
Best wishes
Kevin

Hi Chris
Just booked VIP tickets for the House of Common date. Taking my 10 year old son for his very first gig!!
What do we get as part of the ticket? Also any chance we can have our photo taken with the band? Would really appreciate it as you’ve been my top band throughout my life so far.
Cheers
Lee

Avatar

Dear Lee
I think you should check before buying them!….OK I looked it up and it says;
“VIP Ticket
Your VIP ticket will gain you site entry via a bespoke entrance lane via the box office event entrance – the quickest route into HOC! You get a VIP wristband + a HOC programme. The wristband gets you access into the VIP Lounge where you’ll find a large VIP tent bedecked with comfortable furniture, private cash bar, smart clean loo trailers & outdoor wooden garden furniture.”
It does not say you will meet us but we may be wandering around that area.

Hi Chris, in the Guardian its quoted that London has found us a place where for one day every year we can have our very own festival. Is Clapham going to be an annual event then? I hope so!!

Avatar

Is there any song you’ve recorded that you wish was released as a single, particularly one that you have written or co-written? Suspect there are occasions when it’s difficult for all of the band to agree!

Hi Chris!

The University Of Chichester Graduate Company is a group of 13 Musical Theatre students whom have been studying MT at The University of Chichester for the past three years, where we have developed skills in not only performance, but technical and production values too.

We are a group of already indebted students to who wish to start paying their loans off as soon as possible. To do this we need jobs. To get jobs, we need exposure. Our plan is to take a production of Our House: The Musical to The Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August. Our main outcome from this project would be to network and showcase our abilities in a much coveted setting. We are on a mission to raise nearly £10,000 overall and with lots of other fundraising events we aim to achieve our goal!

This is a completely independent project and is unconnected to our university so are looking for funding and fundraising opportunities at every corner!

We do have a Crowd Funding page for any other fans who are interested in helping kickstart 13 young professionals’ careers.

We appreciate any support you can offer us. Thank you.

Avatar

Dear Connor
There are usually fees involved in putting on a production of “Our House”. I can’t really avoid you paying that as the fees are for the writers etc. But send me a link to your crowdfunding page I can put it on my page and Tweet it etc.

Hi Chris
I’m trying to get hold of the album you guys did in 88 The Madness as it’s the only one I don’t have. The problem is that it’s only available for silly money. Do you know if there are any plans to re-issue it?
Thanks

We have to select the songs and producer and studio etc. All going well, though. Some time this year!

Went to the L.TSO gig at the jazz café in jan, what a great night me and the wife had. Apart from the great music and atmosphere, we were treated to an appearance by Thommo himself at the Dublin Castle. Got a handshake off Bedders as he left the stage, and to top it off, bumped into Monsuier Barzo on the way out who very kindly signed a photo for us.. Anyway I heard thommo on the Johnnie Walker show and he mentioned something bout the ska orchestra supporting Madness at some shows this year. Can you shed anymore light on this?… Looking forward to a nutty 2016!

Hi Chris I’m aware of all the songs you’ve written Madness is all in the Mind is the one which turned out more or less as you envisaged it,but are there any songs which didn’t,for better or worse?

Hi Chris here Joe from Holland I ve got 2 questions why do you never perform Cardiac Arrest at gigs ? and why haven t you kept Listen to your father to yourselves great song ? I saw you lads twice once in The Hague (Madstock eve) and Esher (GREAT) greets Joe

Dear Joe
I have suggested playing “Cardiac Arrest” but we never get round to it. “Listen to Your Father’? Blimey – that was years ago.

Yo Chris! really last one.! i ordered a prop from the drip fed fred video but i’m not sure if it’s genuine…

it’s a manifesto that thommo threw into the air

Hi Chris,

I noticed that Bedders has been using a Jazz quite often, instead of a Precision. I’d be interested to know his thoughts on the Jazz Bass vs Precision Bass and also which strings he uses nowadays.

Many thanks for your valuable time.

Hi Chris,
Well, we all hope about a new album next year, so here’s my question : do you think the new album will have its deluxe edtion available in the Madshop (like “The liberty…” and “Oui oui ….”)? I know, I know, you have to finish it before, but I’m so proud of my deluxe editions!!!
Wish you a Merry Christmas.

Hi Chris, long time no speak. We met when you played Liverpool Echo Arena a few years ago and you were well shocked that Barso had Guest Listed us? Do you recall?

My question is, are there any plans for Crunch! To play in Liverpool any time soon? Would be great seeing Crunch! Again. Saw you in ’92 at the Planet X in Hannover St.

Hello CB,
I have always wondered about the video to Return of the Las Palmas 7. Who put all those short archive clips together? Did someone at Madness HQ create that?

It’s a piece of art! I love how it also bizarrely features in the original video of One Love by Bob Marley. Which I think you know about, right?

All the best. Merry Christmas,
Rich

Avatar

Dear Rich
We didn’t really have many ideas for that single [video wise] and I don’t know who came up with the montage idea. We suggested a few of the images to use and when it was being edited, I suggested “more cuts than Friday the 13th”. So the speed of cutting between the clips gets faster and faster. Great video, quite ground breaking, as that technique was used in a lot of other films and videos.

It’s a gig held amongst the ruins of Tynemouth Priory and has a great vibe about the place. Hi Chrissy Boy. Great to meet you again at The HOF. Shame to read some of the Friday negativity, and then Saturday negativity cos you didnt play the ‘Hit’ they wanted!! You cant please all the part time fans…!
Crunch was excellent, (barring Burtons antics obviously!)
One idea for next year though, howabout one of those ‘Spin the Wheel’ things up on stage or on screen? B/ sides, album tracks and new songs, spin the wheel and leave it to lady luck? Just a thought…
Thanks for the memories, cant wait for the new album( Mumbo Jumbo?)

Avatar

Hi Wayner
What “hit” did they want? Blimey, we did the most popular ones we could think of, plus “Tomorrows Just Another Day”. You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time etc. Friday night has traditionally been something different and we’ve been writing all these new songs, so why not play them? As for Burton, I think his Father in law was egging him on, egging him on. I have suggested that the backstage “dancers” should start their own band/dance troupe for next year..
thanks CB

Avatar

Hi Chris
Well done one and all for another excellent HOF, nice to chat to you a couple of times(on the stairs centre stage whilst you were texting), trouble with the amp on Saturday ?

Avatar

Dear Dannyboy
I wasn’t texting, I was arranging immediate extraction from the area. I had a lot of trouble on Saturday, the amp started making all sorts of funny noises so Geoff [guitar tech] changed the head and we had the same thing. It turned out to be a plug that had come loose due to the stage vibrating so much. Stuff was bouncing all over the place. Well spotted. See you next time? Same place.
thanks CB

Avatar

Hi Chris, I think it would be great if the rest of the Madness albums were released again in fully remastered sound quality (like O.S.B. 35)? The 30th anniversary releases are not from the original studio tapes and they have far too much dynamic range compression added. All the best, Ste C.

Hi,
My son sent a message back in July, however the response does not appear on the ‘Ask Section’.
Both my boys are massive Madness fans and we came to see you in Newmarket on my son’s birthday in July, however he fell off the climbing frame in Newmarket and broke his arm, and he had to be taken to hospital, therefore we had to leave before you came on. My son Louis was extremely upset to have missed Madness and talks about it all the time.
He sent a message to ask if you are likely to be playing again in Newmarket in 2016 as he is desperate to see you live.
He keeps checking to see if there is a response.
Failing that, please could you confirm if the ‘Suggs Tickets’ for ‘My Life’ would be appropriate for an 11 year old and a 8 year old (boys) to attend?
Thanks you in advance for your help.
Regards,
Johanna

Dear Johanna
I think it’s ok, there may be quite a lot of swearing. He sings some songs and tells some funny stories. Can anyone confirm as to whether there is any profanities?
CB
PS This is not the “Ask” section. for some reason, my bit is under “News Blog”. It’s been bugging me, as I always had “Chris’s Cupboard” on the page for all to see. However I get a lot less questions now. I don’t do “next gig” ones though. Any new gigs will be on the live bit. However, just to contradict myself, I can tell you we will not be appearing at Newmarket next year

Hi CB so looking forward to the HOFW but my question is hundreds if not thousands of us have been buying Madness poppy badges which are probably not official but still a class item. if this is the case could you please arrange a proper donation fund for everyone buying these badges included myself and her indoors at the HOFW as we have been using your label. Then it would be all proceeds to the British Legion courtesy of MADNESS. This make take some doing but if anyone can you can, cheers CB.

Hi CB
Just remembered a really weird dream I had about the band last night (don’t worry you all kept your clothes on!) Anyway, in this dream, me and my wife were in London and we were visiting all of the band at their separate homes. Each home we got to had a really weird way of gaining entrance. When we got to yours, we had to crawl down a tunnel, climb a ladder, go down an alleyway and climb another ladder and go up a spiral staircase. When we met you I said ” you wouldn’t believe the trouble we’ve had getting in here” and you replied “yeah…. it’s madness isn’t it?”.
By the way, that wasn’t a joke it was a real dream, must have been brought on by paying off the ‘House of Fun’ weekend yesterday.

Avatar

Hi Chrissy. two questions here. Why did you grow your hair long after mike left, annd who did a flip in the uncle sam video? ps I’ll be at the bristol grandslam gig.

Avatar

Dear Louis
Thommo and I had a bet to see who could grow their hair the longest. No particular wager, just a bet. Just after we did the photo shoot for “Mad Not Mad”, Thommo went to a fancy dress party dressed as a Hari Krishna, which necessitated a cropped head. He appeared in the “Yesterdays Men” video as a Hari Krishna and he also took advantage of the free food they gave out in Camden Town. So I won the bet and I had long hair for quite a while, as my girlfriend liked it. That’s all quite ironic, as I don’t have any hair now! Thommo did the flip on a small trampoline. yours, CB

Avatar

Dear Chrissy Boy, saw you at Doncaster races on Saturday 27th. (You were awesome by the way ) My question to you sir is this; who are you influences musically ? I seem to remember you doing a little Beatles thing on ” Our House “, were you influenced at all by the Fab Four ?
Much love ! ( I know Suggs did a cover of “I’m only sleeping ” )

Dear Kenny
I loved the Beatles as a kid, it was compulsory really. I did write a very Beatles B side once called but ” PLease Don’t Go”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROPddira6ZE
Otherwise the Fab Four were not a major inspiration songwriting wise. In the “Our House” video I was acting out various eras in music 50s, 60s, and 70s

Hi CB,
Saw you guys last night in Chelmsford. Great as always.
Thought it was fantastic when you played “you said” – how great to hear you do an early album track.
Love the Real Ale too !
Have a great tour.

Hi Chris, the new tour sounds very exciting – haydock is just a mile down the road from us but we fancied a bit of variety, so are hoping to get to Headingley in September. However, we’d like to take our daughter Tilly to her first Madness gig (she’ll be just under 3 at the time) A festival style atmos seems just right but I cannot get any confirmation anywhere regarding having to pay for a ticket for, in effect, a 2 year old. I’ve phoned Headingley and they don’t know, I’ve tried to contact the Liz Hobbs Group…can’t get through and get no email response. Any ideas? I know you’re busy (obviously) but thought you might catch this before mid-September! I don’t mind paying but don’t want to shell out an extra £35 if I don’t need to!
Cheers, CB. Hope the tour continues as well as it’s started. Regards, Big E

Dear Ian
I have also emailed you on this subject but I do think 2 is a bit young for this type of show. A seated arena would be better.
all the best, CB

I’m sorry if I missed the info on this. How come you weren’t performing at Gloucester? I saw you were on the posters so thought you were doing the tour.

Sorry Gary, my son was getting married, I thought Suggs would mention it. He booked the wedding long before the first two shows, so I missed Lincoln too. I’m glad you noticed though! I’ll catch you next time.
thanks, CB

Hello Chris,
In your early travelling days with the band- who was your room-mate? And did it alternate?
Also, as there were seven in the band, who got the room to themselves?
(Do you get your own room now?)

Good luck with your Son’s wedding!
I’ll see you On Blackheath!
Best wishes,
Rich

Dear Rich
Oh blimey I started off sharing with Mike Barson, what an experience. Then Suggs ditto and eventually Thommo – oh we had some right old times, I can tell you. Once Thommo and I had this all night battle with Suggs and Chas. Fire extinguisher fights, ha ha puting massive piles of bricks in their doorway. Chas called Thommo and I “Victor and Valiant” – what great nicknames! Other sharers were Woody/Bedders Chas/Suggs, Suggs/Barso and various other combos but usually stuck with those. I don’t know who the odd one out was, we must’ve taken it in turns. Of course we all have our own rooms now. I have a suite with a view. [a Polo mint]. That was quite nice answering that took me right back.
Thanks CB

I watched Ian Dury live at pinkpop in 1981 and he asked you (madness) on stage for “sex & drugs & rock & roll” and I only saw Mike Barson come up . what happened, why didn’t you lot come on stage?

Avatar

Dear Curtis
I remember it well. We were all watching Ian from the front. I was miles away by the mixing desk, when he asked us up on stage. So none of us could get to the stage in time, except Mike. It wasn’t anything personal!

My partner recently purchased a black and red guitar signed by the members of Madness for me as a present. I was talking with another Madness fan friend the other day, and he advised me that these are fake despite a certificate of authenticity and that you had stated that on facebook. Can you advise me whether this is true, I am really pleased with it and don’t want to disappoint her, however, if it is fake we will take it back.
Signed July 2010
Please advise

Dear Craig
I saw the picture you’ve sent and the guitar is not signed by us, it is a fake. According to the “certificate” you are entitled to a full refund, please make sure you get one!
Let me know what happens please, CB

Hi CB
Seen you guys many times over the years and got my tickets for Rhyl and House of Fun, but I’ve never managed to catch you doing ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, so what’s the chance of catching it this year? Also . . . . . . . . . any chance of having a vote on hear as to the karaoke song you perform at the House of Fun?

Avatar

Dear Billy
“Land of Hope and Glory” I’d love to do that. As for the Showtime song I’ve done about everything now, any ideas? Such as “Knock it on the Head” or something, haha

Love your music and it brings back the best times of my life…school…. thanks for the music and keep it coming lads. My question is. The song your a embarrassment. Is that about one of your band members sister bringing home a black lad. Thanks long term fan.

Hi Chrissy, please can you tell me if chas is coming back for this years gigs, I’ve seen you many times in the last few years, O2, brighton where I live 3 times, I saw you just before Christmas and was kind of disappointed that knight boat was opening song, I realise and respect your decision to take out one step but please please please close the show with knight boat, it’s the icing on the cake for many many fans, please pass on my regards to woody, we know each other from a different kind of club in Bromley , best wishes and regards to you all.

Dear Phil
Chas is doing very well but not back for these gigs. “Knight Boat?” er..do you mean “Night Boat to Cairo?”. We may start with something else altogether, so you better get used to it baby. “One Step” has not been taken out it got moved, as without Chas it’s not the same. Keep up the work in the club much respect.
yours, CB
